Some Wakefield residents held a mock funeral Thursday for what they say is the death of their water supply from a sand pit.
They’re protesting the excavation outside their west Quebec village, saying that Coulliard Construction doesn’t have permission to remove sand from the pit.
Protesters said the excavation would damage a spring that supplies many of them with their water.
“This is what can and will happen if authorities do not act to protect the Wakefield spring,” said Peter Andree of SOS Wakefield.
“There are still things that can still be done by our governmental representatives to stop this from happening.”
Couillard said it has grandfathered rights to take the sand out.
Protesters said they’re hoping Quebec’s environment minister will step in to stop the work.
