Some Hintonburg residents are being told to clean up or pay up and face fines as they cope with an onslaught of graffiti in their neighbourhood.

Graffiti vandals often strike a particular back alley off Spadina Avenue. Residents have received registered letters from the City of Ottawa with a 10-day notice to clean the graffiti.

Homeowners say they now feel victimized twice.

"I bought a can of spray paint and sprayed it. It took about six coats to cover it and then what's going to happen is that they're going to come by in three days and spray paint it again," said resident Pat Hunt.

"I left the city two messages to ask them about that because what's going to happen is that they're going to send me another letter and say, 'the problem is back and you have to fix it, you have 10 days.' I'll fix it. How many times are we going to do this?"

Under a new bylaw, the city will remove and charge homeowners who fail to clean graffiti.
