An outdoor rink volunteer in Ottawa who was left brain damaged after a vicious attack by a group of young men can't believe one of his attackers will spend only a few years behind bars.

Douglas Beardshaw, 43, was severely beaten in Feb. 2009 after asking the group of males to stop drinking and smoking in the rink shack at Pauline Vanier Park.

Beardshaw, who is a father of two, was left with permanent brain damage and now walks with a cane.

A judge sentenced Said Muddei, 20, on Monday to three-and-a-half years in jail for his role in the attack.

Six people were charged in connection with the beating. Two youths have already been found guilty. A third pleaded guilty to the assault. Two men are still awaiting trial.
