The victim in the Easter Sunday shooting in Bells Corners has been identified by Algonquin College as Christina Voelzing.

The 24-year-old was just weeks away from graduating from the college’s victimology program. On social media, Voelzing said she wanted to use her education and background to work with and support youth in the criminal justice program.

Voelzing was shot in her home on Sonnet Crescent near Richmond Road and Moodie Drive around 5:00 a.m. Sunday, March 27, 2016. The circumstances around the incident are still under investigation, but police say the incident was not random. Police say Voelzing may not have been the intended target. Nobody is in custody.

Voelzing is in critical condition in hospital and is not expected to recover.

Tributes have been pouring in on social media, with friends and extended family offering their condolences and prayers. Neighbours have started leaving flowers and candles outside Voelzing’s home as a sign of support.

Benjamin Roebuck, the coordinator of Algonquin’s victimology program says his students are struggling to cope with the loss. He says the 38 person class has been offered group sessions and counselling. Exams and final assessments have been postponed.

“She’s wonderful. She’s full of life and really funny. She’s love by so many people,” Roebuck says.

“Christina is so resilient and caring and she would want to be remembered for all of the love that she offers to the people around her and she has really made this a better year for all of us,” he added.

The college has lowered its flag in her honour.

The Major Crime Section has taken over the investigation.
