Ottawa Police are investigating a fatal collision on the corner of Merivale and Viewmount late Monday night that's left two people dead.

Police believe 54-year old Brian Aspelund and his 49-year old wife Dora were making a left turn off Merivale around 11:40 pm when their vehicle was t-boned.

The impact was so severe, the couple died later in hospital.

The driver of the second vehicle was unhurt.

No charges have been laid.  Police are still trying to piece together just what happened,

Constable Chuck Benoit says they are looking for witnesses.

"That's part of the storyline that investigators have to focus on what exactly happened.   If anyone was travelling in the area and saw the vehicles before the collision or anyone who left the scene, thinking other people will talk about it.  A lot of times we're missing that little piece of evidence".

The Aspelunds were well known in the community.  Dora was a nurse at the Ottawa hospital.  Brian a former CTV/CJOH video editor.  Former colleague Pina La Pegna described him as "a gentle man, with such a kind face. Always smiling".

They are survived by a teenage son and daughter.  In a statement the Ottawa Catholic School Board calls this "the saddest of situations"

"The school community reaches out directly to the family to support them in any way possible, whatever is needed."
