Two people are dead and one seriously injured after a high-speed, head-on collision that closed Highway 7 west of Spruce Ridge Road Saturday afternoon.

Police and paramedics responded to the crash just west of Ottawa around 4:40 p.m.

Police said a 37-year-old woman from Carleton Place, Ont. was travelling westbound in a Dodge Neon on Highway 7 when a Chevrolet Impala travelling eastbound crossed over the centre line and struck the Neon head-on.

The woman, the lone occupant of the Neon, was confirmed dead at the scene.

The two occupants of the Chevrolet Impala, a husband and wife from the Maritimes visiting family near Ottawa, were trapped in their vehicle for 20 minutes.

Both sustained critical head injuries and were taken to hospital. The 59-year-old woman was airlifted to the Ottawa Hospital Civic Campus by helicopter, but later died of her injuries.

The male driver was transported by ambulance to the same hospital and remains in serious but stable condition.

The names of the victims are not being released until families have been notified.

The roadway was closed for several hours as police investigated the collision, but was re-opened Saturday night.

This collision is still under investigation. Police say at this point alcohol is not a factor and seatbelts were worn.

Police said it is unknown why the eastbound vehicle entered into the westbound lane.

However, police warned all drivers against using cellular phones or other electronic devices while driving.
