Ottawa police confirm two men are dead after a shooting at a highrise apartment building near Hog's Back Road on Thursday.

Warsame Okie, 25, and Hayder El-Abadi, 18, were found inside the entrance at 1435 Prince of Wales Dr. by police at about 5:30 p.m. Witnesses had reported hearing gunshots.

One man died at the scene, and the other was taken to hospital where he died from his wounds. Shocked tenants and onlookers were kept back from the scene by investigators, who remained on Friday morning.

No arrests have been made, and police won't confirm if they are looking for suspects.

Police also didn't say if the men knew each other, or if the shootings were gang-related. Investigators spent the day scouring the area for clues, but said no one should fear for their safety.

"I feel nervous actually, because the cops won't tell us anything, they won't even tell us if the people lived here or not, it's kind of nerve-wracking that it happened right in our lobby, said Shawn Marshall, who lives in the building.

Another resident, Jenni Meldrum, told CTV Ottawa that: "I've lived in Ottawa all of my life, and I know crime has increased in the last 20 years, but never in my own neighborhood."

The majority of tenants are Carleton University students. School staff have said counselling is available for anyone who needs help, but couldn't say if either victim attended classes there.

Anyone with information are asked to contact Ottawa police at (613) 236-1222 ext. 5493 or Crimestoppers at (613) 233-TIPS.
