Two people are dead after a four-seater plane crashed in a suburban neighbourhood in southwest Ottawa Wednesday night.
Transportation Safety Board spokesman Chris Krepski confirmed the deaths at about 9 p.m. He also said two TSB officials were investigating the crash.
The single-engine Cessna-177 Cardinal plane went down in a field on Leikin Drive, behind the new RCMP headquarters on Merivale Road.
The wreckage broke into two pieces and hydro poles were down in the area.
The plane went "off radar" just after 7 p.m. while trying to land at the Ottawa airport. It took emergency responders about half an hour to find the wreckage.
The plane is registered to a numbered company based in Gatineau.
Flight records show that it left Ottawa on Dec. 3 and made several stops in the United States before landing in Naples, Fl. on Dec. 4.
The plane spent nine days in Florida and the Bahamas before heading back up north on Dec. 13.
The crash knocked out power to thousands in the Barrhaven area and forced the closure of Merivale Road between Prince of Wales Drive and Fallowfield Road for several hours.
The westbound lanes of Fallowfield Road at Woodroffe Avenue were also closed.
