Ottawa paramedics made a special delivery on the side of the road early this morning; actually, two deliveries in the back of an ambulance: baby girls born a bit prematurely.

“Twins are usually a high risk pregnancy for anybody,” says Ottawa Paramedic Matt Friesen, one of four paramedics who helped with the deliveries, “so we figured it was best to get her to the hospital but the babies didn’t want to wait.”

Friesen explains that they were initially responding to an emergency call in Stittsville at 3:40 a.m. about a woman in labor.  They didn't know until about 15 minutes in that the woman was carrying twins.

“When we asked whether it was a boy or girl,” Friesen says, “we were told it was girls and my partner and I looked at each other.  We were quite stunned about that at 4:00 in the morning.”

Friesen and his partner radioed for help then pulled over at Alta Vista near the Ottawa Hospital to help deliver the baby girls.  One needed a little help but they're both doing fine.  That’s the exact spot, by the way, that Paramedic Matt Friesen helped deliver a baby boy in the back of his ambulance a little over a year ago.

“It’s an exciting experience, a good call,” Friesen says, “It’s exciting to be part of that and it really wakes you up in the morning.”
