Two people were arrested separately in Cornwall on Friday for possessing contraband cigarettes.

RCMP officers stopped a 2003 Chevrolet Impala in a Brookdale Avenue parking lot after following it from Akwesasne. They seized 746 bags of cigarettes, along with the vehicle.

Police arrested the 42-year-old female driver after she refused to get out of the car. She will appear in Cornwall court of April 7 to face charges of possessing a tobacco product not properly stamped and obstructing a police officer.

Later on Friday, police followed a 2000 Chevrolet cube van from Akwesasne to a Tollgate Road residence. They found 4,350 bags of cigarettes in several cardboard boxes inside the vehicle, which was also seized.

Jeffery Adams, 41, of Cornwall was charged with possessing a tobacco product not properly stamped. He was held for a bail hearing.

The RCMP conducted the surveillance operation with officers from the Canada Border Services Agency.
