SOUTH FRONTENAC, Ont. - A truck driver has been charged after more than 18,000 kilograms of fertilizer spilled on Highway 401 east of Kingston, Ont.

Provincial police say a tractor-trailer carrying potash fertilizer overturned after striking a small car from behind early Thursday afternoon in a construction zone.

Police say the Ministry of the Environment was called in to supervise the cleanup of the roadway.

OPP said it expected the westbound lanes of the highway to remain closed until Thursday night.

The occupants of the car were not injured, while the driver of the tractor-trailer sustained minor injuries and faces a careless driving charge.
