OPP say a tractor-trailer was travelling the wrong way on Highway 401 causing a head on collision just after 1 a.m.

A tractor-trailer was heading west in the eastbound lanes when it slammed into another tractor trailer. One of the vehicles was fully engulfed in flames.

The crash left truck parts and debris scattered all over the highway. Both drivers were rushed to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The driver of the wrong way tractor-trailer, a 34-year-old man from Quebec, has been charged with careless driving.

Fire crews had to extricate one of the drivers as flames raced through his truck cab.

The spectacular crash forced the closure of the highway at Brockville. Traffic was backed up for hours Friday. Some vehicles ran out of gas leaving motorists stranded on the side of the highway. Many motorists took to Twitter to express frustration as trafffic was backed up for hours.

OPP says eastbound lanes near the collision will be closed well into Friday night.

A detour has been set up on Highway 401 at Long Beach.

Westbound lanes are now open.
