PETERBOROUGH, Ont. -- Three people have been sentenced to jail terms for what a judge called an astonishing act of animal cruelty.
Mike Elder, Ashley Elder and Brandon Brown were sentenced for their roles in allowing two boxer dogs to starve to death in a shed in Peterborough, Ont.
The remains of the dogs, which were barricaded in the backyard shed for 10 days, were discovered by police and the SPCA in October 2013.
Mike Elder, who pleaded guilty to wilfully failing to provide the dogs with adequate food and water, was sentenced to five months in jail with a 10-year ban on owning pets.
Both Ashley Elder, who received a seven month sentence, and Brown, who was given a nine month sentence, were banned from owing pets for life.
Both were convicted of two counts of animal cruelty after a two-day trial. After serving their jail sentences, all three will be on probation for 18 months.
