PETERBOROUGH, Ont. -- Three Peterborough residents have been found guilty on animal cruelty charges in connection with the deaths of two dogs.

The two large dogs were found dead in October 2013 inside a backyard shed in the east end of the central Ontario city.

Investigators say the dogs had been locked in the shed for weeks without food or water.

Ashley Elder, 27, Mike Elder, 33, and Brandon Brown, 21, were all charged with cruelty to animals but numerous delays meant the court case was not concluded until Tuesday.

The case raised the anger of animal lovers and brought placard-waving protestors to the Peterborough courthouse during proceedings last year.

The three are to face sentencing on Nov. 24.
