Three people are homeless after a kitchen fire burned through their southeast Ottawa rowhouse Monday night.

Ottawa Fire Services said they got the call just after 9 p.m. Monday to 1670 Kilborn Avenue, where a fire that started in the second floor kitchen spread up to the third floor.

The one adult and two children who lived there weren't inside when the fire broke out, and victim's assistance has been called to assist them.

Fire crews were able to get the situation under control after about half an hour and limited the damage to that single unit.

They said it caused $100,000 damage to the building and $50,000 to its contents, and the cause is under investigation.
