LAKE GEORGE, N.Y. - Three Canadian women are in an upstate New York jail after a sheriff's deputy confiscated garbage bags containing 57 kilograms of marijuana.

The Warren County Sheriff's Department says the pot was being transferred from one car to another in Lake George on Sunday night.

Sheriff Bud York says a patrol offficer spotted one of the cars turn onto a dead-end road where the department's firing range is located and decided to follow it.

Charged with first-degree criminal possession of marijuana are Kendra Theoret, 22, Kayla Ann C. Snyder, 20, and Cassey O'Byrne, 28, all from Cornwall, Ont.

Several hours after the arrests, another sheriff's deputy pulled over a car in nearby Warrensburg and arrested four Massachusetts residents after finding 4.5 kilograms of marijuana in their car.

York says police believe in both cases, the marijuana - believed headed for the New York City area - was brought through the Akwesasne/St. Regis Mohawk Indian Reserve, which straddles the U.S.-Canadian border.
