The Public Service Alliance of Canada says 2,625 layoff notices have been given to federal government workers in the National Capital Region.

Public servants in Ottawa-Gatineau are taking the biggest hit as they make up the majority of the 3,800 notices given out across the country Monday.

Most of the notices are being given to workers at Parks Canada. More than 1,000 employees there were told their jobs are at risk.

Other departments facing job losses include Human Resources and Skills Development, Transport Canada and Correctional Services.

The head of the Public Service Alliance of Canada says the jobs of close to 12,000 people in 40 departments and agencies are in danger.

John Gordon says the cuts will hurt the economy.

The Conservative budget aims to eliminate 19,000 jobs in a bid to save $5.2 billion.
