The man who shot and killed CTV Ottawa Sportscaster Brian Smith is now back living in Ottawa.
Security warnings have been issued to CTV Ottawa staff after Jeffrey Arenburg was found living at the Ottawa Mission in downtown Ottawa.
“We have been aware since Monday, November 10, 2014 of Jeffrey Arenburg's return to Ottawa. All of our staff have been informed of this,” said Bell Media Vice President Richard Gray, “We will continue to follow Bell Media's standard security protocols, including reporting any suspicious activity to our security and management teams.”
A CTV Ottawa crew spotted Arenburg smoking outside The Ottawa Mission on Wednesday November 12, 2014. He walks with a cane, sports a heavy beard and had his long hair tied back. He was wearing blue jeans and a worn-out brown leather jacket.
When asked why he returned to the Capital, Arenburg angrily told CTV News, “I have to live somewhere.”
Ottawa Police officers spotted Arenburg, stranded, earlier in the week after his car with Nova Scotia plates had run out of gas. Because he has served his time and is now a free man, there is little police can do.
Arenburg shot and killed CTV Ottawa Sportscaster and former NHL Player, Brian Smith, outside the television station’s previous studio at 1500 Merivale Road on August 1, 1995. Arenburg was found Not Criminally Responsible (NCR) of first-degree murder because of a mental disorder.
Several psychiatric assessments suggest Arenburg’s Schizophrenia is in full remission. After a stay at a maximum security psychiatric hospital, he was granted an absolute discharge by the Ontario Review Board November 15, 2006. It was determined that he was at a low risk of re-offending.
Still, Arenburg continued to have run-ins with the law. He was arrested after he punched an American Customs Officer in November 2007. He was sentenced to two years in prison and was deported back to Canada in September 2009.
In 2012, Arenburg was arrested when he fled the scene after being pulled-over for speeding in Quebec. He was sentenced to six months in jail after calling the Judge and idiot.
After his release, he moved to Nova Scotia, where it’s believed he has lived for the last two years.
Residents at The Ottawa Mission tell CTV Ottawa, Arenburg moved into the shelter in early November.
