The extreme cold in the capital has caused many pipes to burst today.
The Ottawa Courthouse had to be evacuated this morning after a burst pipe sent water gushing down six floors and into the basement cellblock.
“It was like Niagara Falls coming down the stairs. It was pretty crazy,” says Ottawa Defence Lawyer, Ron Guertin.
People in the building were sent next door to City Hall to stay warm while officials decided to close the courthouse for the day.
The main entrance to the Ottawa hospital also had to be closed today after a pipe burst there.
Mello’s restaurant in the Byward Market is locked-up for the day while a burst pipe is being repaired.
Courthouse officials hope to have some court rooms open tomorrow. The Regional Senior Justice, Hon. Hugh Fraser, says anyone who was expected in court today or tomorrow should be prepared to proceed in the morning.
