1. CANADIANS REMAIN WORLD'S NUMBER ONE INTERNET USERS

If you're a regular internet user give yourself a pat on the back. You've helped Canada hang onto the title of World's Number One Internet User, according to a recent survey.

On average, Canadians spend over 43 hours on the web every month. We shop on the net, we learn, we communicate. And we waste time.

The biggest increase in online activity in Canada comes from those over the age of 55.

"I took a quantum leap into this century," said Merle Orth, who joined the web generation just a few months ago. "I get up in the morning and it's exciting that people are emailing me."

Jean Macregor, who works for Adult Training Services at the Ottawa Library, said seniors are embracing the internet.

"For the seniors, there is a great enthusiasm for technology and the classes that we run for them are always filled."

People over 55 now account for one quarter of all Canadian internet users. The survey also showed that use of the internet by teenagers is down four per cent. The number of global internet users rose only slightly to 1.3 billion.
