The head of Ottawa's taxi union is going to jail for criminally harassing his daughter in the name of honour.

A judge sentenced Yusef Al Mezel to 12 months in jail on Tuesday.

In handing down the sentence, the judge wrote that Al Mezel threatened his daughter with serious violence, which caused her to fear for her safety in the name of "honour."

Court was previously told that Al Mezel invoked the threat of an honour crime against his daughter because she brought shame upon her family. She was living with a male friend and his family at the time of the incident.
