The mayor of Ottawa says residents in Stittsville have put up with the Carp dump long enough and he will try to find other locations for a new landfill.

"Stittsville has done its part," Mayor Larry O'Brien told city council Wednesday afternoon.

"We will look for other locations within our jurisdictions or slightly outside, but it's time to put an end to the expansion of the Carp landfill."

The mayor echoed that sentiment when he spoke to CTV Ottawa later Wednesday afternoon. However, when asked where a new dump should go, he said he was against landfills altogether.

"I am not suggesting there should be another landfill in the City of Ottawa, I am against landfills. What I am suggesting is if the province actually decides on another landfill site in Ottawa as a necessity, we will certainly combat it with all of our efforts," O'Brien said.

Waste Management insists the Carp landfill is expected to reach capacity by September 2011. The company says when it comes to a new landfill, they'll only consider Carp Road.

Waste Management wants to open a new landfill at the Carp Road site that would handle 400,000 tonnes of waste per year for a decade.

A motion to reject the expansion altogether was defeated 5-17 on Wednesday. However, city council voted unanimously to address their concerns with the province, which has authority over where a new landfill will be located.
