The Loblaws in South Keys will be closed temporarily after a fire in its deli Sunday afternoon.

Marc Messier from the Ottawa Fire Service said they recieved a call around 5 p.m. to a fire that started in the deli's deep fryer.

Messier said the store's fire suppression system wasn't able to put the fire out, so staff came and used four fire extinguishers to knock it down while other staff escorted customers from the building.

"Usually we tell people to bail (in that situation)," Messier said. "In this instance it just took a little help. Definitely kudos to the staff."

Messier said the fire was out when crews arrived, so their role was ventilating out the smoke and making sure the deep fryer was extinguished.

The fire caused $200,000 damage to produce, mostly from smoke coming into contact with perishable food.

There was $10,000 to equipment, which according to Messier was mostly the hood and vat of the deep fryer.

There were no injuries.
