One Canadian soldier had a Remembrance Day he'll never forget, as the once-in-a-century date of 11/11/11 will also serve as his wedding day.
Sgt. Jamie Raycroft and his bride Yvonne Goebel were married in a Carleton Place bridal boutique that used to hold military weddings back when it was a church.
"I'm proud of my military history and I have strong family values so I thought it was a perfect match," said Sgt. Raycroft.
"I thought, ‘Great, let's showcase them and Remembrance Day,'" said Tracy Porcari of Ashton Station Bridal. "I thought it was a great story."
Their wedding started at 11:00 a.m., observing a moment of silence at the same time as the community ceremony just outside.
"It's a very emotional day as I've had some friends that have been lost," Sgt. Raycroft said.
"I was looking at Jamie and Yvonne and just on the other side of that you could see where all the school children and veterans were gathered in the park," said maid of honour Anne Colterman. "I couldn't help but think about the war brides and how they must have felt marrying their soldiers knowing that they may not come back."
Disregarding the emotion that comes when your son gets married, Sgt. Raycroft's father said the day had extra meaning.
"I thought of all the things my father must have went through and I thought of all the things my son has been through also," said Bill Raycroft.
The pair were officially married at 11:11 a.m. on Nov. 11, 2011.
"I'm just very proud to be his wife, he's just a very awesome man," said Goebel.
"I'm so proud and happy of my beautiful new wife," said Sgt. Raycroft. "I couldn't ask for anything more."
