A 31-year-old Smiths Falls man has been charged with attempted murder after a police investigation into a collision in Montague Township two weeks ago.

Police laid the charges against Corey Leafloor after investigating a collision in which he said he swerved to avoid hitting a deer, sending his car into a ditch and subsequently hitting a tree on Roger Stevens Drive on June 28.

Ontario Provincial Police say their investigation revealed Leafloor was allegedly trying to injure a 28-year-old female who was in the vehicle at the time of the crash.

Police say the man allegedly attempted to seriously harm the woman by physically restraining her and purposely driving into the tree. The female received serious but non-life threatening injuries.

Leafloor also faces charges for previous assaults and unlawful confinements in relation to the victim.
