Ottawa emergency crews are helping two people after a small plane made an emergency landing in west Ottawa.

It happened about 700 metres off Woodroffe Avenue near Slack Road.

Ottawa Fire spokesperson Mark Messier says the two people on board don't appear to be hurt and were waving to rescuers as they approached.

It is not known why the plane couldn't reach the airport but the pilot had indicated engine failure, according to Messier.

Messier said on Twitter, the "Plane did land upright and is sitting in field on its belly in deep snow. No major structural damage to plane."
