Ontario's Special Investigations Unit is investigating how police handled a previous call to an Ottawa apartment where two people were found dead over the weekend.
Ottawa Police Chief Vern White called for the investigation, filing a complaint this morning to determine if police responded appropriately to a disturbance call at the Cambridge Street home on Jan. 7.
The SIU, which is called in whenever police are involved in cases resulting in serious injury or death, got involved this morning.
The Ottawa Police Professional Standards Section will also investigate the chief's complaint, and review the actions of the police officers involved once the SIU has completed its investigation.
The bodies of a man and woman were found in the Cambridge Street apartment, located off Bronson Avenue, at 3:30 p.m. Saturday.
The male victim has been identified as Andrew Ferguson, 33. The identity of the female victim will be released either later today or early tomorrow following an autopsy and notification of next-of-kin.
A neighbour told CTV Ottawa over the weekend that a construction worker named Andrew lived in a second-floor unit in the building. She said she last met with the man almost two weeks ago, and noticed multiple slash marks on his neck.
Police are currently calling the deaths 'suspicious.' If the deaths are ruled homicides, they will mark the city's second and third homicides of 2010.
Ottawa police say no further information is available at this time.
