OTTAWA - The Canadian military says it has taken the final steps to officially release convicted sex killer Russell Williams from the Canadian Forces.
The former colonel and commander of Canada's largest air force base, CFB Trenton, is serving a life sentence for the brutal sex slayings of two women.
The Department of National Defence says Williams' two medals and his commission scroll were retrieved from his family, and this completes the process of removing him from the military.
Williams' held the Canadian Forces Decoration Medal, given for good service, and the South West Asia Service Medal, for having served at least 30 days in Afghanistan.
Williams' administrative release from the military was approved and his commission was revoked by Gov.-Gen. David Johnston on Oct. 22.
He was also given a final medical exam last month and the Canadian Forces retrieved and disposed of his military clothing, equipment and publications.
