Twenty-three service centres on Highway 401 from Windsor to the Quebec border are shutting down for several years.

Ontario's Transportation Ministry says the service centres need to close so old fuel tanks can be replaced.

Five service centres between Kingston and the Quebec border will be closing on Sept. 30, eliminating hundreds of jobs in the area.

"These aren't fat cats or Liberal cronies at the lottery corporation or eHealth; these are people of modest means who need that paycheque to survive. In most cases, there are no other jobs for them to go to," said Bob Runciman, Conservative MPP for Leeds-Grenville.

He said the closures will also affect driver safety because it will drastically reduce the number of highway rest stops between Toronto and the Quebec border.
