The American ambassador to Canada is showing his country's appreciation to the capital with a photo exhibit marking the Sept. 11 attacks.

The exhibit was unveiled Friday outside the United States embassy and shows the tokens Ottawa residents left there hours after the attacks on the World Trade Centre in 2001.

"It is our own simple gesture to those who walked alongside of us as we made our way through the dark," said U.S. ambassador David Jacobson.

The exhibit stretches down two blocks of Sussex Drive and commemorates the tenth anniversary of the attacks.

"To walk past this display of compassion was to know that in our moment of tragedy, the citizens of the United States were not alone," Jacobsen said.

Those having a look at the exhibit said the photos brought them back to that historic day.

"I remember the shock of seeing the second tower go down live, and the silence at work that day," said Kathleen Larsen.

"I remember driving to work and not seeing a lot of people on the road and I think it was a bit of a numbing feeling," said Pierre Imlay.
