Thanks, but no thanks.

That’s essentially what the Ottawa Senators have told Ottawa City Council regarding Sens Mile.

On Wednesday, Council voted unanimously to open Sens Mile immediately in recognition of the amazing late-season rally the team has mounted and the potentially record-breaking streak by rookie goaltender Andrew “Hamburglar” Hammond.

“This is an historic streak for the team,” said Councillor Rick Chiarelli, who put forth the motion. “It’s important we recognize what we’re in the middle of.”

The problem is, Sens Mile is a playoff tradition. And the Ottawa Senators have not made the playoffs yet.

Ottawa Senators President, Cyril Leeder, said as much in a letter to Mayor Jim Watson.

The City has agreed to the request.
