The Ottawa Senators say owner Eugene Melnyk has undergone successful liver transplant surgery in Toronto.

The team making the announcement Tuesday evening, shortly after the 8 hour procedure  had concluded at Toronto General Hospital.

The Senators say both Melnyk, 55 and the anonymous donor are doing well and resting comfortably.

An urgent public plea for a live liver donor last week drew interest from hundreds. Twelve people were referred to the University Health Network's Multi-Organ Transplant Program for further assessment.

In a statement the Senators say Melnyk and his family wish once  again to thank everyone for their support, and extend their immense gratitute to the unnamed donor and the donor's family.

An update on the health of both Melnyk and the donor is not expected until later in the week.
