An 87-year-old Ottawa woman feels she was tricked into picking up a second, unneeded water heater for her home.

Ruth from Kanata, who said she didn’t want her last name used, said she’s been paying two water bills since January.

The woman, who is blind, said she let two men that she thought were from Reliance Home Comfort come in to replace her Reliance hot water tank.

That’s the reason she said she let them take her one-year-old one and replace it with one that actually came from National Home Services.

"I think their bad business practice is telling people they need new tanks when they don't and getting business that way is not right," Ruth said.

For the past few months, Ruth said National has been ignoring her calls as she’s being double billed – Reliance said they haven’t had the first tank returned.

Her nephews and neighbours said they’ve been unable to get answers.

“They get on the phone with me and eventually tell me that they're really sorry and they'll get back to me that day, or by the end of the week,” said neighbour Chrissy Hollands.

Hollands said that never happens, and when she calls back she’s put on hold without ever being helped.

Ruth’s second bill is $17 a month for a senior on limited income.

She said she wants to sell her house and move into a retirement home, which she can’t do until this matter is cleared up.
