Michael Ignatieff's director of communications was killed when his motorcycle collided with an SUV in Ottawa's Hintonburg neighbourhood.

Mario Laguë, 52, was on his way to work Thursday when his motorcycle T-boned an SUV at the intersection of Scott Street and Parkdale Avenue. Paramedics say Laguë was pronounced dead at the scene. Police say charges may be pending.

Laguë was well-liked in the Liberal Party. Ignatieff remembered him Thursday as an accomplished man who played an important role in his inner circle.

"A man of many talents and accomplishments, Mario was a beloved member of our staff, and a valued personal advisor to me and the entire Liberal team. A man of great integrity and spirit, Mario served his country in many capacities with honour and dignity," Ignatieff said in a prepared statement.

Before being appointed as Ignatieff's director of communications, Laguë worked briefly in the same position for former prime minister Paul Martin. His career also included a stint as ambassador to Costa Rica.

Ignatieff said Laguë brought passion to everything he did, and his warmth, humour and passion for Canada will be truly missed.

Ignatieff said his thoughts and prayers remain with Laguë's family. He leaves behind a wife and two children.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper offered his condolences Thursday afternoon, saying Laguë's service and devotion to his country are part of the legacy he leaves behind.

Before working for the Liberal Party, Laguë was a senior member of the public service, who worked in the Privy Council Office.

The 49-year-old driver of the SUV was also injured in the crash. He was taken to hospital to be treated for minor injuries.

Police are continuing their investigation.
