With about 360 cm of snow this winter, Ottawa has experienced the second snowiest season in recorded history.

CTV's weather specialist J.J. Clarke says Ottawa needs to get 90 more centimetres of snow to break the record set during the 1970-1971 winter season.

The most recent storm dropped 27 cm of snow at the Ottawa Macdonald-Cartier International Airport. The Gatineau airport got between 16 and 18 cm of snow.

The snowfall also broke a record for snow on March 5. The previous record was set in 1993 and totaled 15.8 cm.

Hoping for sunshine

The mounting snow banks and long winter has many people thinking about a quick sunny getaway but Laurie Hansen of Bytown Travel says there aren't many vacation packages still available.

"There's always a few people who haven't made their plans yet who really do want to get out of Ottawa because they've simply had enough of the snow," Hansen told CTV News.

Roger Michel is one of those people who've had enough of the white stuff. Fortunately for him, he planned ahead.

"Hopefully at this time next week, I'll be golfing and will be the envy of all my friends," said Michel, who's looking forward to a trip to the Bahamas.

But even those who planned vacations to get away from the snow had problems escaping Wednesday.

About 40 flights departing from the Ottawa's Macdonald-Cartier International Airport were cancelled or delayed, partly due to cancellations at the Toronto Pearson International Airport.

"In terms of the weather here it's a combination of volume and ice," Krista Kealey of the Ottawa Airport told CTV News. "It makes things challenging."

Morning commute disrupted

Blowing snow, ice pellets and freezing rain slowed down the morning commute for many trying to get to work, school and other appointments on time.

The snow storm particularly disrupted OC Transpo, causing buses to run 10 to 15 minutes late.

Winter's not over yet

The system that slammed into eastern Ontario and western Quebec is now heading for the Maritimes.

As this storm leaves the region, weather forecasters warn residents that another storm is expected to hit the region Saturday.
