Second Cup founder Frank O'Dea shared his personal story Monday, speaking of his rise from homelessness to co-founding one of Canada's most successful businesses.

"(Three values) resonate for me and speak to me about how I got here," O'Dea said. "Hope, vision and action. On the streets you have very little hope."

He spoke at the Ottawa Valley Brain Injury Association's benefit dinner, which raised about $50,000. It was organized by law firm Tierney Stauffer.

O'Dea managed his substance abuse issues that landed him on the street and co-founded Second Cup in 1975. He also supports numerous charitable endeavours, including Street Kids International, an organization that helps out homeless children around the world.
