School's out forever at 40-year-old Nepean school

The last day of classes -- ever -- at Parkwood Hills Public School took place on Friday, closing out a 40-year history that saw thousands of students pass through its doors.

Finances, falling enrollment and a number of other factors played into the decision to close the school at Ottawa-Carleton District School Board trustee meeting in January. It was a narrow vote, passing by a 6-5 margin.

"It was unfortunate that there was one trustee who couldn't be here because of a family emergency . . . but she was fully in support of the future of these schools. And if she was here, this would have failed in a six to six vote,” said trustee Mark Fisher at the time.

The 400 students who attend the school will mostly go to Sir Winston Churchill Public School, which is just on the other side of the schoolyard. The rest will attend nearby Meadowlands Public School.
