For the first time, the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board will participate in the Capital Pride Parade.

School board trustee Donna Blackburn, who is openly gay, is behind the move. She says it's time for the school board to publically show its support for gay rights.

"After I was sworn in, I approached the director and the board of education about the idea of doing this, and they were very supportive, and for me it was just a natural progression of what the board's been doing for many, many years, supporting gay, lesbian, transgendered and bisexual youth," Blackburn told CTV Ottawa on Tuesday.

"The message is that our school board is very inclusive and accepting."

Representatives from the school board will ride in a yellow school bus covered with banners in the parade.

The Capital Pride Parade takes place in downtown Ottawa on Aug. 28.
