Ottawa's Royal swans will remain in the Capital after city politicians voted against a plan to give them away on Thursday.

City officials say they will now look at constructing the birds a modest new winter facility either across from the Sportsplex in Nepean, or at another location in Carp.

The swans currently spend the winter at a rundown facility on Leitrim Road.

The Queen gave the Capital six pairs of Royal swans in 1967 to commemorate Canada's 100th birthday.

The 11 Royal swans will take to the Rideau River in late May.
