The lone male suspect in an Ottawa bank robbery was shot and killed after exchanging gunfire with police in the city's east end Friday night.

The robbery occurred at about 7 p.m. at the TD Canada Trust branch at 562 Montreal Rd., just east of St. Laurent Boulevard.

The suspect fled on foot. Police on patrol nearby caught up with him near Rideau High School. Shots rang out as they approached him. Nearby residents reported hearing six to eight shots that sounded like firecrackers.

The man was alone, according to police. There were no other injuries reported.

The province's Special Investigations Unit, which handles incidents involving the police that result in violence, will take over the investigation. Several streets in the area were blocked Friday night while police and the SIU gathered evidence.
