A developer plans to transform the Rideau Regional Centre in Smiths Falls into a seniors' retirement community after the government closed the centre for adults with developmental disabilities in 2009.
The site has been purchased by Joe Gallipeau, a housing developer in Smiths Falls.
Gallipeau plans to turn the site into a community for active seniors. The facility already has a large swimming pool, a gym and laundry operations.
The project is expected to create hundreds of jobs in the community.
