Organizers are revving up their engines for the 10th annual Motorcycle Ride for Dad, raising money and awareness for prostate cancer.

Thousands of engines will roar to life in Ottawa and other communities on Saturday.

The aim -- to raise money for prostate cancer and encourage men to get their prostates checked. Promoters want men to know that if prostate cancer is detected early, it doesn't have to be fatal.

Over the years, the ride has raised millions of dollars for cancer research and education.

"In Ottawa alone, in 10 years of spring rides we've donated actually $1.88 million to prostate cancer and awareness," said Wayne Rostad, the celebrity honorary chair of the Ottawa ride.

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer to affect men in Canada, typically showing up in men in their 40s. One in six men will likely develop prostate cancer in their lifetime, according to Prostate Cancer Canada.

The first Motorcycle Ride for Dad event was organized in Ottawa in 1990. The ride has grown from 75 bikers to more than 2,000 participants in this weekend's event in Ottawa.

In August, motorcyclists will take the cause on a cross-country tour, riding their bikes from St. John's N.L. to Victoria.
