The Nepean Redskins name will die at the end of this football season.

The football club has decided to retire the name following unrelenting pressure in the community.

The nickname controversy even made headlines south of the border.

That pressure was led by local Ojibway musician Ian Campeau who calls the Redskins name racist.

Campeau recently filed a complaint about the Redskins name to the Ontario Human Rights Tribunal.

The football team sent a message to club members explaining the change.

"It has become apparent that, while the name has always been presented in positive tones in all Club initiatives, it has evoked a very negative sentiment for some in our community. While the selection of the name was done with best intentions, it has become a divisive element in our continued pursuits as a volunteer sport organization." wrote Stephen Dean, President of the Nepean Redskins Football Club.

The team will pick a new name and colours following the end of this football season.

Dean says the transition will cost the team more than $100 thousand dollars.
