The Ottawa REDBLACKS are making a fashion statement on the football field.

The new CFL franchise unveiled its third jerseys on August 18, 2014. The red uniform features red and black plaid on the sleeves, pants and even the players' helmets.

"To throw out something different, something new," says REDBLACK quarterback Henry Burris. "That's kind of what Ottawa is going for right now."

The new look comes at a time when the team is looking for a fresh start. The REDBLACKS have struggled to win in their inaugural season with a record of 6-1.

Fans calling into TSN 1200 weren't sure this was a way to change the momentum of the team.

"Well, it's different and people's initial reaction to different it they hate it," says TSN 1200 host John Rodenburg.

"I think until people see it on the field and see it in action, I think it may make a difference," he adds.

The “lumberjack” plaid is tribute to Ottawa’s logging history, which is consistent with the teams buzz-saw logo and Big Joe mascot.

Many people told CTV News the plaid reminded them of other things than football, from checkers with a grandparent to wearing flannel on a cold winter’s day.

At Smoke’s Poutinerie, the look is close to home. The franchise has red and black plaid on its sign and walls.

“Lumberjack plaid is Smoke’s Poutinerie brand,” says original franchise manager Matt Jenkins.

REDBLACKS fans say the pattern will become what the team makes of it. They say hopefully it will become a pattern associated with pain by their opponents.

“The intimidation will come from Quarterback sacks and nailing receivers in the open field,” says one fan.

The jerseys are now on sale at the official REDBLACKS store at 841 Bank St.
