In wartime, cooking supplies were scarce and recipes often didn't include sugar, eggs or milk. Supplies were often rationed and families modified recipes to match what they had in their cupboards. An example would be this no-milk, no-egg chocolate cake:

Pre-heat the oven to 350 degrees F.

In a 20 cm (8-inch) square pan put:

  • 1 1/2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon of baking powder
  • 1 cup of granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon of baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon of salt
  • 3 tablespoons of cocoa powder (not instant cocoa drink mix)

Add to the pan:

  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon of white vinegar
  • 5 tablespoons of vegetable oil
  • 1 cup of lukewarm water

Mix everything together with a fork and bake for 30 minutes or until done.
