A first-year Queen's University student has died and another remains hospitalized after the pair fell through a skylight at the school's library.

The incident happened Thursday evening around 7:30 p.m. Students and staff were working in the library when Habib Khan, 19, and Stephen Nagy, 18, came crashing through the roof.

Khan, of Saudi Arabia, was pronounced dead in hospital. Nagy, who is from Mississauga, remains hospitalized in stable condition. Khan's parents are now rushing to Ontario from Saudia Arabia.

John Pierce, associate vice-principal and dean of student affairs, said officials don't know why the students were on the roof.

"We have no idea what they were doing on the roof," he said. "Students are not to be on the roof of any building here at Queen's. It's about a 40-foot drop to the floor below."

A student who was friends with both victims said they were good students who never caused any problems.

Police are continuing to investigate.

Counsellors are available at the school for students dealing with the tragedy.

"Our hearts and prayers are with Habib and Stephen's families and friends," principal Daniel Woolf says in a statement.

"This is a terrible tragedy."

It's the second fatal incident in three months at Queen's.

In September, first-year student Cameron Bruce, of Westport, Conn., was found dead outside a university residence after falling to his death from a dorm room window.
