MONTREAL - The Queen's Gaels earned a shot at defending their title after advancing to the final of the Canadian university women's soccer championships.
Chantal McFetridge scored the deciding goal on penalty kicks as the Gaels beat the Ottawa Gee-Gees 1-0 in semifinal play Saturday.
Queen's will face Montreal in the final Sunday after the Carabins beat the McGill Martlets 2-1 in double overtime.
The result spoiled a sensational 14-save effort at the other end by Ottawa goalkeeper Cyntha Leblanc, who also turned aside two shots in the shootout against the Gaels.
"The game was a very hard one to win, a little bit too much for my heart to take," said Queen's coach Dave McDowell. "Ottawa did a really good job, they stayed very organized, which made it difficult to penetrate."
Montreal meanwhile overcame an own goal in the 11th minute to beat McGill.
Veronique Maranda sent the game to extra time for the Carabins on a free kick in the 79th minute, and Eva Thouvenot-Hebert scored the winner in the 107th.
The Martlets crumpled in the 120th minute when Kelsey Wilson was ejected after taking her second yellow card of the match.
