PWHL unveils Ottawa Charge team name and logo
Ottawa's professional women's hockey team will be called the Charge, with a spinning 'O' logo designed to convey a sense of energy and movement.
The Professional Women's Hockey League unveiled the names and logos for the six franchises on Monday ahead of the second season, after the teams had no-names for its inaugural season.
The PWHL says 'Charge' pays tribute to Ottawa – from the city's motto 'Advance' ('En Avant'), with the logo featuring a monogram 'O.'
"I think it's really exciting for our fan bases," Brianne Jenner, Ottawa Charge captain, told reporters. "It's not just a nod to the city and being the centre of government, but it's a nod to our fans as well. I hope our fans realize that and embrace that; the electric energy that they brought in our first season is a big part of our identity."
The Ottawa Charge will have a red, grey and yellow colour scheme, with the 'O' logo with spikes.
"The monogram 'O' reflects a spinning object charged with electricity, intensity and the power the fans bring to every game,' the Ottawa Charge said on social media.
"The faceted cut in the 'O' subtly introduces the letter 'C', tying the design back to the team's name."
The spikes at the back of the 'O' logo are for "spark and speed."
"Spikes radiating from the 'O' emphasize forward momentum and the spirit of the city, 'Advance – Ottawa En Avant.
Senators defenceman Thomas Chabot was asked about the team's new name at the Senators golf tournament.
"I really like the name," Chabot said. "To see them having so much success, the whole city of Ottawa getting behind them and supporting them all season. I think it gives the whole city a name to cheer behind. Obviously, it's great to see that."
The Arena at TD Place will be the primary venue for the 2024-25 games.
Toronto's team will be known as the Sceptres, and Montreal will be the Victoire.
The PWHL says team gear and accessories are available at The Official Shop of the PWHL. Redesigned jerseys will be unveiled closer to the start of the season.
Here are the team names for the 6 team PWHL:
- Ottawa Charge
- Toronto Sceptres - The “Sceptres” embody Toronto’s regal history and commanding presence, reflected in the moniker Queen City and iconic places like Queen Street—one of the city’s most culturally vibrant thoroughfares—connecting diverse neighbourhoods and showcasing Toronto’s rich heritage.
- Montreal Victoire - ‘Victoire’ embodies Montréal’s joyously competitive spirit, acting as inspiration for the city to climb to even greater sporting heights. Win or lose, ‘Victoire’ is a mindset, celebrating the city’s pursuit of achievement.
- Minnesota Frost - 'Frost' embodies the State of Hockey’s deep-rooted love for the ice— and the sport that has become a timeless tradition, bridging generations.
- Boston Fleet - 'Fleet' pays homage to Boston's collective spirit and rich maritime history, representing the city's unified strength and resilience.
- New York Sirens - ‘Sirens’ is an ode to New York City’s one-of-a-kind energy, pace and rhythm – embodying the City’s sounds and people. Sirens also speaks to the sweet sound of the goal horn after the puck goes into the net.
