TORONTO - The Ontario legislature has passed a private member's bill that would make it mandatory to report suspected child pornography to police.
Liberal backbencher Laurel Broten's bill received third reading Thursday evening.
All three parties spoke in favour of the idea, which would impose fines of up to $50,000 if someone failed to report an image of child porn.
Broten says every image of child pornography is a permanent, evidentiary record of child abuse.
Premier Dalton McGuinty and Ontario Provincial Police Commissioner Julian Fantino were among those to throw their support behind the bill.
Private member's bills rarely become law in Ontario, but few have the widespread support from all three parties that this one had.
