Ottawa's bus service could be back sooner than initially expected.

Premier Dalton McGuinty has agreed to fast track inspections for an additional 160 buses. He says the city needs full transit service sooner rather than later.

"We'll do everything we can to get 100 per cent of buses back on the roads in a way that doesn't compromise public safety," said McGuinty.

OC Transpo says this could mean another 60 buses will be on the roads by Feb. 23.

It will be an early return if successful; the last forecast by OC Transpo said full service would not resume until April.

The city is expected to release a revised bus service plan on Monday.
